Step by step
- In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
- Scroll to Media.
- Click Upload new and choose your video file, or drag it into the Media area. To use a YouTube or Vimeo video instead, click Add from URL; the video must be public or unlisted on YouTube, or allow embedding on Vimeo[3].
- Drag the video thumbnail into the position you want. The first item is usually what shoppers see first[3].
- Click Save, then open the product page on your phone to check how it looks.
In the Shopify mobile app, open the product, tap + in Media, and choose a YouTube or Vimeo URL or a video from your camera roll[3].

How your theme shows it
Shopify lets product media include images, Shopify-hosted videos, YouTube and Vimeo videos, and 3D models, but each theme decides how they display. In Shopify's developer documentation, video playback settings such as autoplay, loop, muted and controls are all off by default, and themes that show several media items at once should only play the active video[2]. So if your video doesn't autoplay, that's usually the theme, not the upload. Check your theme's settings for the product media gallery.
Uploaded file or YouTube link?
| Upload to Shopify | YouTube or Vimeo link | |
|---|---|---|
| Limits | 1 GB, 10 minutes | None from Shopify |
| Looks like part of the page | Yes | Shows the player's own controls |
| Best for | Short product clips | Long how-to or setup videos |
Why bother
Wyzowl's State of Video Marketing 2026 found that 85% of people said a video had convinced them to buy a product or service, and 63% said they'd most like to learn about a product by watching a short video; reading an article came a distant second at 12%[4]. The survey is small (266 respondents, late 2025) and self-reported, so read it as a direction rather than a promise, but it matches what most stores see: video answers questions photos can't.
What to show in a product page video
- The product in use in the first seconds, not a logo or a slow pan.
- Scale: the product in a hand, on a shelf, next to something familiar.
- The detail people ask about: the texture, what's in the box, how it opens, how it fits.
- Captions: plenty of people watch with the sound off.
- Short: 20 to 35 seconds suits most products. See how long a product video should be.
Getting product videos without filming
If you don't have footage, Framewright makes short videos from your Shopify catalog: your photos, price and brand colors, with an AI voiceover and captions timed to each word. They render at 1080×1920, which suits phones; on a desktop gallery a vertical video may show with bars at the sides, depending on your theme. The same videos work as TikTok and Reels ads.
